History and Origins
Kitten’s Joy is one of the offspring of El Prado (Sadler’s Wells), who brought about a cultural revolution in the United States when crowned the country’s leading sire.
As the sire of the English champion Roaring Lion, Kitten’s Joy’s success is even more remarkable considering his humble beginnings, initially supported only by his owner. Kenneth Ramsey, the unconventional founder of Ramsey Farm, is often regarded as an outsider by Kentucky’s equestrian aristocracy.
In the U.S., Kitten’s Joy is considered a modern-day Linamix, with his offspring leaving a lasting legacy in breeding.
Interestingly, the “Big Three” of Europe—Ireland, the United Kingdom, and France—have not yet recognized any of his sons as stallions until now. France is leading the way with Taareef and now Luck Of The Kitten, whose progeny made their debut on the racetrack in spring 2019. Luck Of The Kitten arrived in Italy at the end of the 2018 season, covering around 50 mares at our center.
Luck Of The Kitten’s Lineage
The maternal line of Luck Of The Kitten was well-known in France during the 1990s when his third dam, Sha Tha (Mr. Prospector), represented Sheikh Mohammed Al Maktoum under the training of Andre Fabre, achieving notable results at a high level.
This lineage leads to Anura (Giant’s Causeway), the dam of Luck Of The Kitten, who was bred, like every year, to 200 mares by Ramsey. Anura produced Luck Of The Kitten as her first foal.
Racing Career
Trained by Wesley Ward, Luck Of The Kitten made his debut with a second-place finish at Saratoga—America’s equivalent of Deauville. He made a strong impression on Arlington Million Day.
Ridden by Frankie Dettori, who said of him: “He’s a very nice horse with plenty of speed,” Luck Of The Kitten moved to the U.S. West Coast in the autumn, winning the Zuma Beach Stakes Lr at Santa Anita with Corey Nakatani aboard. Nakatani remarked: “He has tremendous quality, excellent baseline speed, and a solid build. I believe he should try his luck at the Breeders’ Cup.”
At the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf G1, he secured an impressive placement, surpassed only by his stablemate Hootenanny (Scat Daddy), who had returned from Europe after competing in the Prix Morny (Gr.1) at Deauville.
With two wins and five second-place finishes as a two-year-old, Luck Of The Kitten later achieved a second-place finish in a Gr.3 race upon his return at Keeneland, followed by a fourth place in a Gr.2 at Churchill Downs. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during his attempt at the Jersey Stakes at Ascot in 2015.
